Manitou Springs
The
walk around Manitou Springs was very entertaining. The beginning of my stroll
was accompanied by a statue built on top of a rock in the shape of a soldier.
The guide went a little too fast to really know anything about it, but it was
up high like you were meant to look up to this person. It makes you feel like
you are actually witnessing the true scene being depicted, because when you
look up, everything in the current background is gone and unable to pollute the
image.
Further down the road were many interesting sculptures, but this one is my favorite. It’s an old natural stump that was turned into a work of art. It’s awesome that they last outside and nobody destroys them. It must have taken a while because the whole thing is hollow and has a seat in the doorway and seams inviting, like it’s meant to be played on by kids in the park.
After
the stump carving I saw a sculpture of a moon with a face and it made it seem
like this is a very peaceful town, but
to really appreciate this piece would be to see it at night when its
quiet and dark.
After
a big loop of sculptures I came to this one of a weird flower. It complimented
its natural surroundings by being a man made interpretation of nature.
After
the sculptures I decided to go out on the town and visit some shops down the
strip. I came across Dandelion who is a street performer linked to an art
project of my own from last semester. He has been there for many years in the
same spot during the summer and really gets the public involved and having a good
time. The fact that it is a town based on tourism makes it a necessity for
customer interaction and me taking pictures of it and posting it prolongs its
existence.
Gorgeous color images. It captures the spirit of Manitou perfectly!
