Florissant Trip

I think it’s really interesting to think about how old the earth is, and how insignificant we are. Going to the Florissant Fossil Beds really makes you think about how much the earth has changed, whether that change was caused by humans or just a natural progression of the earth. When leaves fall from trees now, we don’t think anything of them. We sweep them into bags and throw them away without giving them a second thought, even considering it a chore, but leaves that have fallen so many years ago strike us with awe. The petrified trees, living ages ago, would have likely been cut down in our current times to use for houses or campfire wood or pencils. Seeing how the earth ages and how things stay with us as the world moves on really gave me an impression of how our actions affect the future. If someone had cut down those trees to use for their own good, we wouldn’t be able to see them now. I also think it’s amazing how we’re protecting these items from our past, but we don’t recognize that we should be saving the things from our present, too. There were signs asking visitors to please stay on the path and not disturb the petrified trees, but there are no signs outside forests. The rain forests are being chopped down day after day to better humankind without a thought of humankind’s future (or the world’s future). With all the respect we show to the things of the past, we must also show respect for the things of the present so they will still be there in the future.
