Berger

One of John Bergers arguments in Ways of Seeing was being able to relate to ones artwork. An artist should be able to create a piece of art that everyone can relate to. In the second room of the gallery there was a section on a little girl who was struggling with leg issues. It showed her journey in every stage. It showed when she when to surgery and seeing the innocents in her. This artist made you feel her pain and then feel her progress. The photographer photographs the little girl still being able to enjoy her life even with her leg issues.

The series of photographs showing the little girl made me think about my own cousin and what he went through not being able to walk. All the things he had to go through growing up as a kid not being able to run outside and play with the others kids on the neighborhood. It’s amazing looking at him now and what he has overcome. I believe this artist made it so that even if you didn’t know anybody in this type of situation, it still made you feel something for her. Every picture that this artist took showed some type of expression of emotion. You were able to understand the story being the little girl by knowing very little about the story.

John Bergers idea of picture impact is very important to art. People should be able to feel something when looking at the artist work. I feel the section with the little girl progression with her leg issues throughout the years represents Bergers idea best. You could see and feel the girl pain as well you can see her happiness. The artist made a story using only pictures that kept you interested in the story that the artist was trying to tell about his daughter.

  1. Also, one of Berger's main arguments is that, just as the photographer chooses the subject, the viewer draws from his or her own assumptions, experiences, prejudices, and emotions when considering the work. You know this first-hand!
