Florissant Photos

Single Petrified Redwood

Triple Petrified Redwoods

Fossilized Flower called the Florissantia

My experience about the fossil beds started when I first heard that we were going to them. At first I thought that we were going to go see dinosaurs; but to my surprise we did not go see dinosaurs, we went and saw something a little more remarkable. We started our walk into the fossil bed park; we came across this unusual rock that appeared to be coming out of the ground. What was unusual about it was the fact that it looked like a rock from the outside but from our vantage point looked like wood on the outside. Come to find out it was a petrified redwood stump. When we came across another stump, this one reminded me of Devil’s Tower in Wyoming.  As we moved a little further, we came across an amphitheater in which on one side showed a petrified triple stump. This was where one stump had died and had three saplings grew near its trunk. This shows us the cycle of life in a standstill, even though they were fossilized and dead, this gives us a snapshot into the past to see that even though they were around 34 million years ago, they are still doing the same in present time. After seeing this snapshot of the past, seeing all the different types of species that were around back then, such as plants and animals, it makes me wonder or ponder the fact, how will our civilization look in 34 million years from now? What kind of history will we leave behind?
